The shape of this roller barrier is similar to a road divider which is composed of two elongated steel plates. However, in this roller barrier there is a tube between the two plates and it is supported by steel poles on each tube. The tubes on the yellow roller barrier are equipped with reflectors, making it easier for drivers to see them at night. The tube is made from Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate (EVA) polymer which is light and elastic so it is not easily damaged. EVA is more flexible and elastic compared to other polyethylene resins. In addition, EVA has a smaller mass density than rubber. Even though the tube is quite light, the mass of the roller barrier reaches 85-100 kilograms per meter when it is assembled with the other parts.
The way this roller barrier works is by converting impact energy into rotational energy. This can be proven when a vehicle hits a roller barrier, the tube will rotate and push the vehicle back to its lane and prevent it from moving to another lane. The vehicle's tires can adjust to the vehicle frame because the rotation of the tube does not change the direction of the vehicle's speed. This can minimize the possibility of the steering system losing its function and a series of collisions occurring. The potential for vehicles to penetrate road barriers is smaller than road barriers that only consist of steel plates.
Another advantage of installing a roller barrier is that the damage that occurs to the roller barrier due to a collision is only experienced by the part that is hit. This is because the tubes are individual, so only the damaged part needs to be replaced and it doesn't cost too much.
Installing a roller barrier is a little more complicated than the guardrail that is often found in Indonesia because the tubes are installed every 70 cm. The high cost of this roller barrier means that its installation is only carried out in areas that are prone to accidents, such as sharp corners that often or have the potential to cause many victims.
